An injury plagued Valencia team heads to Germany with a 1-1 result after the first game, knowing that they will have to score at least once if they are to have a chance of progressing. They are however staring at numerous injuries and suspensions for this game that will leave them relying on the depth of their squad.
Werder Bremen
Ruled out: Marko Marin, Torsten Frings (doubtful), Mesut Ozil (doubtful)
Home game record: German Bundesliga 4-5-4Werder is heading into this match with a fresh win at Hoffenheim in their mind. Their last 4 home games says 1-2-1 but they have also faced 3 of the top 4 teams in the league in those games so you can not really read to much from that. For this game they will face another tough opponent Valencia and they will have to perform at their best. Claudio Pizarro has been redhot in the Euro League, scoring a total of 8 goals so far and it was also him who secured the weekends game winner, 9 minutes before time. Werder is a very explosive team that has been known to have a high-scoring capability and I am sure they will bring that to this game aswell. They have won their last 2 home games in the Euro League against FC Twente 4-1 and against Nacional de Madeira 4-1.
Valencia
Ruled out: David Albelda, Jeremy Mathieu, Ever Banega (suspended), Pablo Hernandez (suspended) Alexis (doubtful), Vicente (doubtful), David Villa (doubtfull)
Away game record: Spanish Primera 7-3-4Valencia is without an away win in over two months and winless in their last four outings, recently they have struggled to keep their players in the game with 7 players being dismissed in their last 7 games. On top of this they find themselves in serious injury problems as the list above indicates. The most prominent name on that list is off course attacker David Villa who is suffering from shoulder worries that also saw him miss the weekends 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona. In the last round the lost away to Club Brügge 1-0. After a good 1st half they found themselves one man down again early in the second and as a result ended with a loss. They however took care of business 3-0 at home to set up this tie but will now have to focus on keeping their start 11 on the pitch if they are to challenge Werder.
Conclusion:
A high-scoring Werder Bremen team against a defensive minded Valencia – I do not foresee another high scoring affair but with Valencia’s absentee problems and their recent form in mind, I am sure that a red hot Claudio Pizarro will show the way for Werder and show the home fans at Weserstadion that Werder is a serious contender for this years Euro League title. Taking further the injury concerns of Valencia into consideration,I recommend betting on Werder Bremen to win.
