Sevilla have the chance to make history and hold a slight advantage following the first leg having drawn 1-1 in Russia. Sevilla have enjoyed European success before, recording back to back UEFA Cup wins in 2006 and 2007, but have never progressed beyond the last 16 in Europe’s finest tournament, The Champions League.
Sevilla FC
Ruled out: Abdoulay Konoko
Home game record: Champions League (2-1-0), Primera Divison: 7-5-2
Sevilla go into the match having taken just two points from their three league games since the first leg, drawing at home to Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo La Coruna and losing 3-2 away to Real Madrid. Saturday's 1-1 draw against Deportiva saw Sevilla dominate the match but being unable to break the tie at the end. In a stroke of luck however, the rest of the rounds results fell to their advantage and they remain in 4th position in the league standing. Sevilla take with them a 1-1 draw in the first match and hence can in theory rely on a goal less draw to progress but this is way to risky. Instead coach Jimenez relies on a better efficiency in front of goal as was the case against Deportivo and realizes that this could be a historic moment; “ahead of such an important event we have to increase our efficiency to try and reach the quarter-finals and convert it into an historic fact for Sevilla and the whole city”. The squad has not yet been revealed but both Louis Fabiano and Frederic Kanouté was on the pitch this weekend and is expected to start in front for this game which will be a major boost for the Sevilla offence.
CSKA Moscow
Ruled out: Kiril Nababkin, Uros Cosic
Away game record: Champions League (1-1-1)
CSKA Moswow will return for this game having two more competitive games under their belts following the resumption of the Russian league, losing 1-0 to reigning champions Rubin Kazan in the Super Cup and then beating Amkar Perm 1-0 in their opening Premier Liga outing on Friday night thanks to Japan midfielder Keisuke Honda's injury-time winner. Their away record during this years Champions League isn’t impressive, however they did record a 3-3 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford where they actually led for most of the game. This time around they will face a European team with a clear knowing that they will have to score again. The first game saw CSKA controlling the ball in big parts of the game and increasingly got closer as the game progressed. It was however a judgement day strike from Mark Gonzalez's that drew CSKA level and assured that they at least travel to Sevilla with some hopes of progressing.
Conclusion:
Sevilla FC will be bidding to make their deepest ever run into the Champions league tournament. Even though the latest results in the league haven’t been convincing, I am sure that they will step up for this game and bring pride to Andalusia and Spain. The prospect of having their attacking duo of Fabiano and Kanouté intact again is going to be too big of task for CSKA to handle and I recommend betting on Sevilla FC.
